World Cup winning season ends with podium finish

Young Driver AMR second in eventful race in Brazil

01.12.2014 - GTE

Four wins, four second place finished, one World Cup title: Young Driver AMR ended the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship season at Sao Paulo in Brazil with a second place finish in the GTE-Am class. Kristian Poulsen, David Heinemeier Hansson and Nicki Thiim scored the eight podium finish in the Aston Martin Racing entered Young driver AMR-Aston Martin Vantage GTE in as many races. Young Driver AMR finished first or second in all races this year. Poulsen, Heinemeier Hansson and Young Driver AMR secured the World Cup win in the GTE-Am class already at the previous round at Bahrain 14 days ago. Among the World Cup title, Young Driver AMR won the GTE-Am class at the 24 hours of Le Mans in June.
The final six-hour race of the season was the most challenging one for Young Driver AMR this season. Nicki Thiim took the lead during the opening hour for 39 laps, but the Young Driver AMR-trio had then to overcome a penalty and puncture among other troubles. Despite the set backs, all three drivers showed once a great performance and battled back. The races ended behind the Safety-Car after a crash of Mark Webber in the final hour and the Young Driver AMR-Aston Martin finished right on the tail of the class winning Aston Martin with Young Driver AMR Christoffer Nygaard. The third class win of Nygaard secured his runner up position in the World Cup. With Poulsen/Heinemeier Hansson being World Cup winners, Nygaard second and Thiim third, drivers of Young Driver AMR finished the season in the first three positions of the GTE-Am class championship.
„We certainly didn’t experienced an easy race, but beside all the troubles, we still managed to finish second. This proofs once again how good this team and these drivers are and that they truly deserve the World Cup», Jan Struve of Young Driver AMR said after the race. „It was a great season, we finished in the first two places in all races. We would have liked to end the season with a victory, but have to admit that the sister car, in which our Young Driver Christoffer Nygaard showed an outstanding performance, was quicker today. It was a great end of a perfect season and now it’s time to celebrate.“
„After an almost perfect season, it seams we spared all troubles for the last race“, Heinemeier Hansson said. „Luckily we claimed the World Cup already at the last round, so there was nothing to worry today. At the end is great to finish the season on the podium.“
